After I left Cambodia I flew to Malaysia and had a day and a half layover there on my way to Kenya. It was so good for my soul! It was time to be alone with God and sort out my thoughts about leaving Cambodia and there were green trees and flowers! Cambodia was beautiful but very brown and dry and seeing growing things was good for me. From there it was on to Kenya to meet the team.
Eric was never going to do the Africa portion of GlobeTREK with us so we knew he wasn’t going to be there but Deb and Andrew pulled out towards the end of our six month internships so “the team” consists of me, Kara, and Melissa. Just three white girls taking on Africa!
Kara had grown up in Kenya and for her it is home so she was our guide while we were there. We saw so many neat organizations from an orphanage to a centre teaching women to sew and make jewelry to an organization who works with homeless children. We also got to see where Kara grew up and it was so cool to see her in her home. After almost a week in Kenya we moved on to Ethiopia.
We only had three days in Ethiopia and met up with a wonderful couple doing translation work there. After the craziness of Kenya it was nice to have some down time in Ethiopia to journal and debrief our experiences in preparation for home. From there we went to Egypt.
We all LOVED Egypt. For me it was so fun thinking that Jesus had walked there before me and the Israelites and just thinking about those connections. We went to the Cairo museum and the pyramids and seeing all that history was amazing! We were working alongside Campus Crusade for Christ in Cairo and it was so cool to see their ministry and just be with them as they worshipped God in Egypt. Then we flew to Istanbul.
Istanbul wasn’t a stop where we were meeting up with a missionary or seeing an organization. We are here just to hang out and relax for two days before heading into the hecticness of transitioning back home. And it has been AMAZING! For the first time in nine months we don’t have a schedule or meetings to keep or anything that we have to do so we have been just wandering around. Seeing museums, random worship sessions in the park, prayer sessions in our room, mammoth shopping trips, getting hit on by everyone, and eating so much Turkish food. It’s been such a blessing to be here and experience the culture but also just kick back and not worry about anything, get our heads on straight and get ready to transition back into “real” life.
It’s hard to think about going back to Canada. I’m SO excited to see my family but thinking about ending this part of my life is hard. Saying goodbye to these two girls who have shared space in my rooms and my heart for months now is hard. But this is all part of the adventure. I’m learning that this grand adventure I’m on with God doesn’t stop because GlobeTREK is over. Life back in Canada is an adventure too. And I’m excited and scared and in need of God just as much now as I was when I started this trip September 2nd, 2014. Tomorrow we board a plane headed for Canada. I’m going home… sort of.
